Organ donation is the gift of an organ to a person with end stage organ disease and who needs transplant for therapeutic purpose. As per WHO global road safety report 2015 India accounts for more than 200,000 deaths because of road accidents. In 40-50% of these fatal road accidents, the cause of death is head injury, leaving the victim a potential organ donor
NOTTO (National Organ & Tissue Transplants Organization, India), estimates that every year about 200000 kidneys, 80000 Liver, 50000 heart & 100000 cornea are required. In addition to the above there is requirement for pancreas and lung transplants. What needs to be emphasized is that even if 10% of road traffic accident deceased patients become organ donors, it can lead to a situation where there is practically no requirement for a living person to donate an organ.
